"Noe Pariarcha" Noah and the lineage of his three sons Shem, Ham Japheth Reverse side: Shem's lineage. Below: Noah's three sons find their father drunk from wine and half naked sleeping. They cover him up with a blanket. Here, most likely, you are looking at are tfor he first time printed, According to the Book of Genesis, Noah was the first vintner, the father of wine growers. In the internet I found notes about an international symposium on “The origins...of Wine" held at the Robert Mondavi Winery in Oakville, California. When the question was raised: If Noah was the first wine grower, what grape did he use? The assembled experts agreed that it must have been one of the Muscat family. Well, even though we shall never know this for sure, we are getting a hint when looking at the grapes shown on the woodcut I am here describing. The coloring here is indicating light-colored grapes (and we are talking here about a splendid, superb original hand-coloring, applied at the time of printing, thus more than 500 years old) In case the buyer of this woodcut wishes to frame it, let me suggest that it be framed with glass on either side, in order to keep both sides of the print accessable to the eye. A 500+ years old woodcut has, naturally, some traces of age and use. There is some spotting in margins, some little tears in margins, and there is a repaired tear in the left-hand text part. Allimages are in very good condition. And, as mentioned above already, the original hand-coloring is excellent! Double page size sheet: 42 x 54.5 cm (16.5 x 21.5") $ 950.00 Order Nr.SCHEDEL235519 |

Oil painting (on laminated beaver board) A cluster of red, rose and white grapes among other fruit i(Apples, peaches, figs, pears, cherries)s surrounded, in a setting of antique ruins, by a bunch of exotic tropical birds, among them an ara and a cockatoo having a palaver over their unexpected discovery. Well executed bizarre and whimsical painting in wonderfully bright colors and great artistic mastership. This scurrile painting is not signed or dated. Our estimate is that it dates back to the nineteen sxties when the type of beaver board, (Hartfaser) used here, came on the market. Colors are fresh, bright and clean. Birds and fruit are realistically depicted. The fact, that this painting is even 12 x 16" allows for the assumption, that the artist was British or American or at least worked where inch-measuremnets are used. Condition: Without the least of blemish! 30.5 x 40.7 cm (12 x 16") $ 380.00 Order Nr. WINE235725 |

"Descrition Geographique de la Terre Promise, Terre des Hebreux, et des Israelites Partagée selon l'Ordre de Dieu, aux Douze Tribus Descendantes des Douze Fils de Jacob". Copper etching by Pierre Moulard Sanson in outstanding recent coloring. Paris, 1712. In the decorative baroque cartouche in the upper left corner is the description of this map given in the title. It shows the land Israel with the locations of the 12 tribes. On the right an extremely decorative figurative border decoration with two Biblical scenes and a mileage chart at the bottom. The upper part shows a grape-harvesting scene where two harvesters carry a grapevine loaded with grapes. The Bible refers to wine: 1And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 2Send thou men, that they may search the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a ruler among them. 3And Moses by the commandment of the LORD sent them from the wilderness of Paran: all those men were heads of the children of Israel. 3And they came unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two upon a staff; and they brought of the pomegranates, and of the figs. 24The place was called the brook Eshcol, because of the cluster of grapes which the children of Israel cut down from thence. Also: Noah, the man of the ground was the first to cultivate grapes to produce wine (1. Mose / Genesis 9,20). This is a remarable observation as modern science believes that wine originated from the area south of the Caspian Sea. Condition: Near Very Good! Vertical centerfold that is hardly visible. 35.4 x 39.8 cm ( 13.9 x 15.7 ") $ 920.00 Order Nr. HOLYLAND235598 |

Bacchus WINE SCULPTURE "Silenus", knowledgeable tutor of the Greek God of Wine Dionysos, Bacchus in the Roman mythology. Silenos was a jolly good fellow, always tipsy if not drunken with the ears of a horse. Silenus, son of either Hermes or Pan and a nymph, belonged to the entourage of Dionysos / Bacchus, who cherished his prophetic gift and his wisdom, which he seemed to possess. The original of our stauette of Silenus was found in Pompei in 1863. “The Illustrated London News" showed an engraving of the statue and marvelled in its edition of December 31, 1864: “During the last three or four years, since the misrule of the Neapolitan Bourbons was superceded by the kingdom of Italy, great progress has been made in the task of bringing to light that abundant store of curious relics of antiquity which had remained for eighteen centuries buried in the ruins of Pompeii. The extent and importance of these operations... have been acknowledged throughout Europe by the studenta of Roman history and the connoisseurs of classic art" And later: “The statue of Silenus, bearing a tray on his head, is thought to have been a lampstand." The statuette depicts Silenus stemming the mentioned tray which most likely held a receptable for the oil lamp. The bearded Silenus is crowned with tendrils of wine. His left hand is holding a snake which, in turn, holds the tray and whose tail end is curled up on his shoulder. Our statuette of Silenos is, as is the original, of bronze. The casting happened around 1900/1910. It has the desired verdigris patina. The round base, on which Silenus stands, is ornamented, among other engravings with grapes. The statuette was photographed against backgrounds of different colors. We put a bowl of plastic grapes in the lower photo. Overall hight: 57 cm (22.4") Silenus with raised arm: 48 cm (18.9") Diameter of base is 25 cm (9.8") $ 2200.00 Order Nr. WINE8649 |

Bacchanalian scene. Grape-crowned Silenus with a prankish smile offering a basket full of grapes and fruit to bare-bosomed Venus, who, Amor's arrow in hand, looks puzzled, but smiling at admonishing Amor, who, with index finger raised, holds a torch in the other hand. The torch light gives this painting the intense light effects, leaving all except this intimite bacchantalian scene in the dark, from which the vibrant and the subdued colors glow with flashy intensity. The oil painting on canvas is by an anonymous artist. Time of painting: Ca. 1850/60. The stretcher frame is the original one. The black color of the extreme left corner has been redone. Otherwise the painting has exactly the kind of patina one wishes for, including the desirable craquelure. The gold-colored frame is 20th century. The frame is darker and more gold-colored than the photos show. Measurements: Painting without frame: 46 x 56.7 cm (18.1 x 22.3") Including frame: 60 x 72 cm (23.6 x 28.3") $7000.00 Order Nr. The Verdelho Grape Here we witness one of the first attempts using a steel plate instead of a copper plate for printing fine quality botanical prints. First used in England about 1820 it soon replaced the "soft" copper material. This astonishingly fine steel aquatint shows how much diligence and artistic attention the new medium received by the artists experimenting with it. After all they were expected to show that the copper plate could indeed be replaced. Steel aquatint in original hand
coloring. Engraved after Miss Drake for the
