Copper etching by Cornelius Huyberts (ca. 1669-1712)

Published in "War Commentaries on the Celts", by Julius Caesar

by J.and R. Tonson. London, 1753

Huyberts did this engraving undated with a dedication to the Earl of Stafford

about 1696/1700. It was named ãGermanorum vetus Sacrificandi ritus".

Tonson republished an illustrated English version of Caesar's ãCommentaries"

and used Huyberts' print, giving him credit ãC. Huyberts F"

Light general age toning. Very light browning on centerfold. Small repair in lower margin on centerfold. Good condition.

The Walpurgis Night (April 30) was on the evening before the ancient Celtic festival (Beltane, Beltaine, Beltany)
It is celebrated halfway between the Spring Equinox and the Summer Soltice. Special bonfires were started
to protect the people, cattle and crops.

Antique Prints of the Celts (Kelten)

From Julius Ceasar's "War Commentaries on the Celts", in which he described the somewhat perplexing encounters with the people north of the Alps. When you look at the engravings you kind of know why the Romans, far advanced in culture and techniques of all kinds, were bewildered.

Page size: Ca. 41.5 x 25.5 cm ( 16.3 x 10 ")

Prints have light overall age toning and some light browning on margin edges. Some of the prints were not printed perfectly straight on the page. This does not affect framing them. There is some minimal scattered spotting which is normal on most prints of this age.

Special faults are metnioned.
