Crophius did a number of engravings for an Augsburg art gallery. He did not give the name of the painter. But it is known that the etching was done after Jean-Baptiste Pater (1695 - 1736)

Copper etching by Charles Nicolas Cochin senior (1688 - 1754) after the painting

by Antoine Watteau (1684 - 1721). Paris, 1727.

Watteau's painting of a garden party of the well-to-do in Paris, called Fête à Champêtre is one of his major works. Cochin, on the other hand, possessed the touch for detail in rendering Watteau's intentions. A very decorative etching.

Wide margins show some traces of age and use along the edges. The image itself isin perfect condition.

Le Contretemps (The wrong moment)

Copper etching by Francois Dequevauviller (1745 - 1807) after the painting by Nicolas Lavreince (1737 - 1807). Paris, ca. 1790. Engraving is same size as painting.

Maid or female doctor just about to give a lady with her bare behind an enema, when the door opens and a man peeks in.

Print is a bit creased in marguins and near title, a few pin-pricks visible against light.. Margins show some traces of age and use.

Stipple engraving in reddish color by Dumee after the painting by Angelica Kauffman. Published by I. Read. London, 1795

There is English text left and right of title with brief explanation concerning Penelope, the wife of Ulysses... Here she shows friends the shroud for her father-in-law she was weaving during the three years of Ulysses' absence from Troya, thereby keeping her suitors at bay. During the days she was weaving, at night she unraveled it.

Very good condition.

Copper etching by Nicolas De Larmessin (1640 - 1725) after the painting

by Nicolas Vleughels (1668 - 1737). Paris, ca. 1700

The title is figurative and a play on words, remembering Jean de la Fontaine's fable with the same title, as the calf, the boy is searching, is a quite willing and expectantly reclined young country girl, who lets the boy peek under her knickers, while she looks on across her already exposed bosom. Up on a tree sits a happy voyeur to this erotic scene.

Wide margins with edges showing some traces of age and use. Image in perfect condition.

This agreeable engraving shows a bit of the amusements of the Parisian nobility and society, while on the left the “general public" is amused by a showman's presentation of his act on a makeshift stage. The scene may be interpreted as illustration of prevailing decadence, just three decades before the French Revolution of 1789. Text below in the French language.

"Les Vestales" (The Vestal Virgins)

Copper etching by Pieter Hendrik Jonxis (1757 - 1843) after the painting

by Jean Raoux (1677 - 1734). Painted by the artist in 1727, the engraving was published in Paris ca. 1800.

In ancient Rome the Vestal Virgins were actually the only women honored with priesthood. Their main purpose was to maintain the sacred fire of Vesta, godess of the hearth. When in Pompei, "The House of Vestals" was unearthed, it became fashionable for artists like Raoux to thematize this fascinating subject.

The print shows, along its margins traces of age and use. The image itself is nicely imprinted. But the overall appearance is only good.

"Les trois Déesses se préparant pour le jugement de Paris." (The three godesses prepare themselves for the judgement of Paris)

Copper stipple etching by Philippe Simonneau (born 1685, death date unknown) after the painting by Perin del Vago (sic). The painter's corredct name is: Pietro Buonaccorsi, who called himself and was named: Perino del Vaga. ( he assumed the name “Vaga" from a Florence painter who was his teacher). Dates of his life: 1501 Florence - Rom 1547). The engraving was published in Paris, ca. 1720.

Hera, Athena and Aphrodite, the three godly beauties from Greek mythology are getting ready for the judgement of Paris who had to decide who of the three was the most beautiful. The godesses are assisted and jubilated by servants and an assembly of putti.

Narrow margins. Printed on very thick paper. One repaired blemish of minor importance.

This etching is one of the qualitatively pretentious, early and rare samples of color printing!

A young lady, mor that than a country girl is resting for a picknick during barley harvesting.

The image is in very good condition, but the margins show various traces of age and use, including a tear on the right side of margin.
