Antique Botanicals from "Hortus Romanus" by Georgio Bonelli

TO OUR OWN DELIGHT AND HOPEFULLY ALSO YOURS' WE CAN NOW ADD ANOTHER BOTANICAL RARITY TO OUR WEBSITE: A FEW PRINTS FROM THE VERY RARE "HORTUS ROMANUS" OF WHICH, BETWEEN 1772 AND 1793 8 VOLUMES WITH 800 ENGRAVED PLATES WERE PUBLISHED. YET THE EDITION WAS VERY SMALL, SO SMALL INDEED THAT EVEN FAMOUS COLLECTIONS (HUNT, LIBRARY OF CONGRESS AND THE BRITISH LIBRARY) ARE MISSING ONE OR MORE VOLUMES. OF THE FEW COPIES PRINTED ONLY A HANDFUL WERE ORIGINALLY COLORED. AS A MATTER OF FACT IT IS SAFE TO ASSUME THAT, DUE TO THE ABSOLUTE SCARCITY OF THE WORK, NOT EVEN THE ANNOUNCED 300 COPIES WERE ACTUALLY PUBLISHED

THE BEAUTIFUL BOTANICAL RENDERINGS WERE MOSTLY ENGRAVED BY MADDALENA BOUCHARD AFTER THE DRAWINGS BY C. UBERTINI. LITTLE IS KNOWN ABOUT GIORGIO BONELLI. HE DID WRITE A SHORT INTRODUCTORY TEXT, PUBLISHED IN VOLUME I.

Prints have some minimal, light scattered spotting on the images.
Small worm holes and worm tracks in some margins.
