Botanical Prints by L'Admiral Copper etchings by Jacob L'Admiral, jun., Amsterdam 1700 - 1770 Amsterdam, in contempory hand-coloring. He was the son of Jacon L'Admiral, sen. who had ioimigrated from Normandy to Holland. He specialized on the metamorphosis of different species of butterflies. His (excellent) work remained fragmentary. Starting in 1740 he published only 33 copper etchings. After L'Admiral's death the plates came into the possession of Dr.M. Houttuyn who edited the text and published the plates in 1774 at J. Sluyter under the title "Nauwkeurige waarnemingenomtrent de veranderingenvan veele insekten of gekorvene diertjes". Only 2 of the plates bear the engraver's abbreviated signature (1 and 7). The work is generally considered as being of very high entomological and botanical quality. RARE, BEAUTIFUL and DECORATIVE! The plates are very clean. Occasional minor
spotting in margins. Liquidation Sale! Discount! At 80 years old I am selling my stock! 70% Discount on All Prints on this page! Take 70% off the listed price. |
