This extremely decorative print of the harbor of Ostia, demonstrates how much care and feeling for beauty are
in such
a print. A great statue stands in the harbor entrance, protected against the unruly sea by walls designed for their
beauty and protection. In the lower right are the two sides of a Roman coin with the profile of Nero on one side
and the harbor of
Ostia on the otherside. In the lower left is a simple title cartouche.

The margins are a bit dirty. In the lower margin are three small repaired tears near the centerfold. Overall condition
is Very Good.

Further text: Dedication to His Excellency Giovanni Fane Lord Burghersh (General John Fane, 11th Earl of Westmorland (1784 - 1859). Fane was British Minister to Tuscany in Florence from 1814 to 1830 (among many other posts)

The coat of arms shield: Ne vile fano (bring no vile things to the temple) may be John Fane's.

The impressive copper etching has hung in our home over 30 years. It has to yield its wall space, alas!, for an equally much cherished gouache of an equally impressive eruption of Vesuvius.

Print has narrow margins all around. There are some traces of age like general age toning, some wrinkledness and a few repaired tiny tears along margin edges.

For aficionados of Pompei, this is one of the most beautiful prints showing the ruins and the surrounding area. In the
background is Vesuvius and foothills. The Gulf of Naples is to the upper left.

The margins are very wide around the image. The are scattered small spots (foxing) in the margins. In the lower margin
are two somewhat larger spots and in the far lower corners are rust stains from thumb tacks. The overall condition is Very
Good.

Enchanting view of the Gulf of Pozzuoli, the earthquake-ridden city still in its architectural splendor with the remnants of the Temple of Serapis in the foreground. Cicero's villa “Accademia" on the hillside on the right. Some of the pillars of an antique three-miles-bridge from Pozzuoli to Baia Ponte di Caligula) still visible in the gulf. Baia in the distance. Monte Nuovo, a mountain grown within 48 hours of a vulcanic eruption clearly recognizable as a vulcanic cone.

The etching had suffered some damage , especially in the margins. It has been expertly restored and laid down on heavier paper without any loss to the desired patina which is a mark of distinction!
