"New Yorke 1695" Lithograph by Hayward. Published in "History of the City of New York" by David T. Valentine New York, 1853 Lithograph is printed on thin blueish color paper. This east-oriented plan of early New York shows New York City just a few years after it had been renamed from ãNieuw Amsterdam" (this happened in 1664). Already developed is the South portion of Manhattan. We see Broad Street and Broad Way. And Wall Street was as far as the city had been developed. Wall Street had actually, on the north side, the old wall protecting the City of Ne York. However we already see the future planning drawn into the plan toward the North to Maiden Lane. Basically we are looking at, what we nowadays know as ãThe Financial District" of New York City. A fascinating early areal (bird's eye) view of the southern tip of Manhattan. This old plan was used in the publication mentioned above. The plan had to be folded several times to fit book size. The folds are smoothed but recognizable. An inset in upper left of lithograph has explanations of buildings with numbers that correspond with the numbers in the plan. The condition is good. Some
minor traces of age and use, mainly along the margin
edges. 23.7 x 37 cm (ca. 9.3 x 14.5") $ 240.00 (Please look for discount at top of this page. Here 40% = $ 144.00) Order Nr. NEWYORKCITY255441 |

The city of New Amsterdam, as seen here in this lithograph, was the exact view of the settlement, which has developed since into the gigantic City of New York.. "Die Blackwell-Bruecke in New York" Blackwell's Bridge in NYC. Lithograph by R. Schmalenberg. His signature is in the lower right corner of this lithograph. It is undated. But it is safe to assume, that it was published in the year of inauguration Blackwell's Bridge was named so during construction and for a short time after opening (1909). The name derived from Blackwell Island (now Rososevelt Island), which served as basis for two of the four main bridge pillars across East River. The bridge was renamed Queensboro Bridge, popularly also called 59th Street Bridge, as it arrive in Manhattan between 59th and 60th Street. This important bridge spans East River and connects Manhattan with Long Island and is thus one of the important early 20th century traffic constructions. Schmalenberg has portrayed the Bridge, here still titled "Blackwell-Bridge", either shortly before or right after inauguration. The German publication, in which this print was published dares from 1910. The artist centered, staged, featured the bridge in the middle of a futuristique phantasy world, with retrospectives like three mast sail ships and previews of air planes and a blimp. The two layer bridge is alive with railroad passenger trains, pedestrians and, on the low deck, with horse carriages. There is a marine war ship as well as a big steamship, and there are the first high rise buildings risen in Manhattan. I would not call them sky scrapers. But the tendency in NYC is directed upward. It is a fascinating lithograph, letting the viewer be a contemporary witness of urban development, of daring, modern bridge architecture and of looking into the future in which these hints of a technical revolution will soon become facts. There is half a book page of German explanation with regard to the bridge. I could not buy the original. But there was a xerox copy with the print. This copy is enclosed. The print is clean and in very good condition. It has, in order to fit the size of the book it was published in, two vertical folds. Lower left the hint (in German) towards the mentioned explanatory text on page 471 of the book. Reverse side is blank. 22,1 x 41,8 cm (ca. 8.7 x 16.5") $ 190.00 Order Nr. NEWYORKCITY251963 |

"A Plan of the City of New York from an actual Survey Made by James Lyne" Lithograph. Published in "History of the City of New York" by David T. Valentine New York, 1853 This lithograph shows the state of New York City in the year 1728. Valentine describes the City of New York from early on when it was still called New Amsterdam. In 1728 Manhattan had already grown to a huge city. This large lithograph had been folded vertically and horizontally several times to fit into the octavo book size. Our restorer has done an admirable job to even out the folds, which can still be seen when the lithograph is held agains a light source. There was a tear where the lithograph was bound into the spine of the book, which is now also expertly restored. There is minimal spotting from Pearl Street to Dock Street (lower left in Lower Manhattan). In general the city map is in very nice condition due to prfessional restoration, It is a pleasure to see and have for anyone interested in the City of New York. 43 x 56 cm (ca. 16.9 x 22") Order Nr.
