Steel etching by E. Muller after the drawing by Raphael. St. Mary joyfully watching little Jesus play with John the Baptist.

The original drawing was credited on this print as having been executed by Raphael D'Urbino. This was believed to be true deep into the 19th century. But art historians have come to the conclusion, that NOT as drawing by Raphael but a painting by Leonardo da Vinci was the origin. It is now understood and accepted, that this is the truth.

Verena Beckmann and Willibald Jakob have published in 2015 the entire story in a book: "Das Mysterium der Madonna del Lago" (The Mystery of La Madonna del Lago).

It is also verified, that the lake in the background ist Lago di Como (Lake of Como, der Comer See). And it is also verified, that the buildings seen on this print are buildings in Bellagio on the Lago di Como.
