In the foreground the city of Pozzuoli. We are looking across Pozzuoli-Bay towards the peninsula of Baia. Behind the peninsula we discover the islands of Procida and Ischia.

An exceptionally shaped view of the Bay of Pozzuoli, beautifully adorned with flowers and fruit garlands. To the

left and right at the bottom is explanatory text (in Latin) of the topography of this artistically interesting print. In the middle,

between a rich harvest of southern fruit, is a homage by Hoefnagel to his friend Abraham Ortelius. A lovely landscape,

enticing you to take the next plane for a vacation at the Bay of Pozzuoli. Verso: Text in Latin.

This view is a reconstruction of the ãMacellum" of the Roman colony of Puteoli, the antique market place of what is now called Pozzuoli on the Gulf of Naples. This market was built in the second century A.D. It was destroyed by various earth quakes. When excavated in the 18th century only remnants were found in an architectural arrangement, however, that it allowed reconstruction. There may be phantasy involved. But written descriptions also helped the imagination of the anonymous artist. What we look at is sheer antique architectural beauty.

Margins have some minor foxing. Otherwise very good condition.

Enchanting view of the Gulf of Pozzuoli, the earthquake-ridden city still in its architectural splendor with the remnants of the Temple of Serapis in the foreground. Cicero's villa ãAccademia" on the hillside on the right. Some of the pillars of an antique three-miles-bridge from Pozzuoli to Baia Ponte di Caligula) still visible in the gulf. Baia in the distance. Monte Nuovo, a mountain grown within 48 hours of a vulcanic eruption clearly recognizable as a vulcanic cone.

The etching had suffered some damage , especially in the margins. It has been expertly restored and laid down on heavier paper without any loss to the desired patina which is a mark of distinction!
